The Class of 1980 had a great time getting together for our 30th Reunion, and having so many classmates participate made all the difference! Despite a Turkey Day game that featured precipitation of every king, our Reunion Weekend got off to a fantastic start with a Webster victory over Kirkwood. Thanks to Andre Nelson's excellent ticket distribution system, a great contingency of diehard Statesmen from the Class of '80 were able to brave the brutal weather under our tent, enjoy hot chocolate (courtesy of Tracey Mack), and cheer Webster onto a 14-12 win over Kirkwood. The coveted Frisco Bell is once again back on Webster turf where it belongs, and all is well in the world again.
What a phenomenal turnout at Llywelyn's on Friday night! The State Championship game played on several flatscreens around the party room, and despite the Statesmen's poor showing, everyone was having too much fun to let it bother them. It was incredible to see so many classmates there, and as predicted, Llywelyn's literally had to throw us out! We just didn't want the evening to end, but the good news was we knew the party was going to continue on Saturday!
Saturday morning, our former Assistant Principal Pat Voss, who currently serves as Director of Alumni, gave a large group of classmates and their family members a very informative tour of the high school. Most of us stared in awe at a barely recognizable cafeteria that now looks like something out of a shopping mall and a tremendous fitness center (donated with alumni dollars) that definitely did not exist in our day! Fortunately, a few things hadn't changed much at all, like good old Roberts Gym, so at least the school still felt somewhat familiar, and we were all proud to know that the old alma mater is in outstanding shape.
Saturday Night at the Frontenac Hilton brought together many classmates who had been in town all weekend with some who had just arrived. Thanks to the efforts of Lynn McMillan Cressler, Mary Anne Riggs Supic, Karen Jernigan Takacs, Tracey Mack, Kate Bundy Weis and Ted Powers, everyone was able to get checked in, grab their drink tickets and get started on a very fun cocktail hour. Barb Thomson Kelly's top hat nametags helped us recognize one another and see that although we may not look exactly like we once did, sometimes that's not a bad thing! Everyone agreed that the Class of 1980 is looking just great at 48! It wasn't easy squeezing everyone in for the class photo, but we got it done (we'll post it under Class Pictures shortly). As our Masters of Ceremonies for the evening, Tracey Mack and Andre Nelson did a phenomenal job of welcoming everyone, celebrating the many reasons our class has to be proud, and making us laugh. After a beautiful invocation by Ken Peck, we enjoyed dinner followed by Don Ragan's wonderful video, which took us on a fantastic walk down memory lane. Thanks to Don's hard work and generosity, everyone was treated to a souvenir DVD, as well (please contact us if you did not receive your copy). Class Members' favorite songs from our high school years were played all evening, and folks enjoyed dancing to our Senior Line Dance song, Rapper's Delight, among other great tunes from the late 70's. Thanks to the generous donations of Barb's brother Vince Thomson, as well as several others, Tracey and Karen were able to announce many winners of Vaultz and Webster spirit items, including a wonderful Webster-themed house flag (courtesy of The Flag Loft) and a football signed by the members of the 1979 State Championship Football Team!
Our committee's primary goals for the weekend were to bring as many classmates together for the best possible reunion we could put together. Thanks to Ken Peck and the incredible job he has done on the website, we were able to communicate with you throughout the past year to accomplish the first goal, and we hope you feel we accomplished the second, as well. Although we are all very grateful for your many expressions of appreciation, ultimately, your participation is truly what made our Reunion Weekend "A 30th Reunion to Remember"!
